Wooden boat restoration on the Sunshine Coast
A wooden boat is a piece of furniture that lives outdoors in salt water. It needs someone who understands both halves of that sentence.
Franz Krutsky has worked with wood since 1987 and has restored wooden boats since moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2015 — bringing to them the same skills he used on Renaissance and Baroque church interiors in Prague: traditional joinery, hand-applied finishes, and the patience to do it properly.

The work
Brightwork
Toe rails, coamings, handrails, hatches and trim — stripped back, repaired and rebuilt to a finish that lasts more than one season.
Interiors and joinery
Cabin joinery, berths, lockers, soles and tables. Cabinetmaking, in a space where nothing is square.
Decks and structural repair
Teak decks re-laid and re-caulked, rot cut out and replaced, planking and hatches repaired.
Spars and detached pieces
Wheels, tillers, hatches, doors, trim — anything that can come off the boat and into the workshop, where it can be worked on properly under cover.
Franz comes to the boat
Boats mostly cannot come to a workshop, so he works where she sits
At the marina, the yard, or wherever she is hauled out. Anything that unbolts and travels comes back to West Sechelt and is returned when it is done. Franz works across the Sunshine Coast, and takes special projects in Vancouver.
